marching band

There is a place in the PN Marching Band for you! If you play a "non-marching" instrument, such as oboe or bassoon, you can participate by learning a secondary instrument, like flute, tenor sax, etc. You can also participate in the Color Guard, or in the Front Ensemble (also known as the Pit).

During the fall season, the color guard is used to create a visual representation of the music that the band is performing. Its members use flags, rifles, sabres, various other props - along with dance and movement - to express the emotion and theme of the show. We often create characters on the field, just as you would see in a theater production, becoming the ‘the story tellers’ for the band.

There are very few experiences in life that are as unique and as memorable as performing in perfect harmony with a dozen of your closest friends. Color guard is one of them. When you join color guard, you are opening yourself up to experience what it feels like to work hard, push your limits and make life- long friends along the way. Sound amazing? It is… and color guard might just be the thing for you.

Do I have to play an instrument to be in color guard?

Absolutely not! In fact many of our members do not play instruments and are not in a band program outside of the marching season. If you do play an instrument and want to try out for the color guard, we love to have band members as a part of our group.

Do I have to have dance/ gymnastic experience to be in color guard?

Nope! You don’t ever have to step inside a dance studio to be able to try out for color guard. However, you will be trained by our instructors how to move, stand and appreciate how your body moves. Many of our members have no dance training coming into guard – but leave knowing the fundamentals of dance movement. Dancing is a major part of what we do on the field, but you will get the training you need.

What equipment is used for color guard?

All members will learn how to spin a flag and will learn the fundamentals of dance and movement. Interested members can additionally learn how to spin rifle and sabre – usually after a year of performance experience. We may also use equipment specifically created for the theme of the show.

Do I have to take the band class if I am in the color guard?

Yes, you will have to take the fall band class as being in color guard makes you a full participating member of the band, same as any instrument performer. You will practice at band camp, with the band during school hours, during after school scheduled practices and on all performance days.
