At the core of the Portage Northern High School Band program is the music. Whether it is out on the Marching Field, at Carnegie Hall, or our own Auditorium, the primary focus of why we do what we do is the music. We perform a wide variety of repertoire ranging from standard festival style literature, to very contemporary wind literature, to popular arrangements of mainstream music. We also have a strong emphasis on students experiencing solo literature, chamber ensemble literature, and various other forms. Everything we do, day in and day out, is focused on continual improvement of your individual performance level. The music is what it’s all about.

Being in band is an experience unlike any other you will have in school. We perform, travel, fundraise, compete, and spend a great deal of time together. This is not “just a class”. You will experience the joy of performing in front of thousands of fans on Friday nights at our football games, playing the fight song in front of the entire student body for pep assemblies, performing for near sell out audiences at our Holiday Collage, march down the streets of Downtown Disney® and perform in the Sharp Aquos Theatre, Orlando, or downtown at First United Methodist Church with a multi-million dollar Organ. The experience is what it’s all about.

Through all of the music and experiences, friendships are the glue that holds it all together. Whether you know everyone in the entire program, or are moving in from out of town and don’t know a single person, you will very quickly make friendships that last over the course of your high school career and beyond. We have students with all kinds of interests outside of band – be it athletics, music theatre, video games, technology, Forensics, etc., you will find a group of students who love what you love and are into what you are into. The friendships are what it’s all about.
